How To Get The Art Deco Look In Your Bathroom

As the emerging profession of interior designer began to increase in popularity in the 1920s, so did the opulent and sophisticated art deco styles. Inspired by the glamour of early Hollywood, coupled with exotic influences from the Orient, Africa and Egypt, art deco made its way into every room of the house – including the bathroom. Read on for tips to help you create this extravagant style in your own art deco bathroom.

From geometric designs to chrome and glass, everything about art deco is bold and eye-catching. Bathrooms became places people wanted to spend time, adding privacy screens and chaise longues to extend their stay in these decadent hotel-style bathrooms. Women spent hours perfecting their finger waves and spritzing expensive perfume before donning their flapper dresses and hitting the town.

Metro tilesMetro tiles are a great choice in bathrooms, particularly if you are opting for the art deco style. Use a white or cream tile with dark grout for a subway look, or go for matching grout if you are looking for something more subtle.

Wallpaper – not ideal in modern bathrooms but a great idea is to order a small sample and frame it for a deco-inspired piece of art. Popular designs included fan or shell designs, jungle inspired prints and geometric shapes.

Borders – geometric shapes were important during the art deco age, and these can easily be created using border tiles. Add a simple black border to white tiles, or add some sparkle with a line of glimmering mosaics.

Symmetry – if you have space choose twin basins and mirrors, however if not try and include some symmetry within your tiles or lighting to enhance the style of your art deco bathroom.

Mosaics – mosaic tiles are a great choice for any bathroom, and an art deco inspired room is no exception. Go for pearlescent or shimmering mosaic tiles for a touch of glamour.

Mosaic TilesMonochrome – black and white bathrooms are synonymous with the art deco style, and a monochrome look is easy to achieve. Use black and white tiles on the walls and floors, or smaller Victorian mosaic tiles on the floor with simple white tiles on the walls.

Chrome – shiny chrome taps, handles and other accessories look great in an art deco bathroom.

Marble – if you’re feeling extremely extravagant you can go for marble (or marble effect tiles) in your art deco bathroom.

Once you’ve created your dream Gatsby-esque art deco bathroom you’ll never want to leave!
