2018 Tile Trend: Terrific Terrazzo

At The London Tile Co. we’re always looking for the next trend in tiles and this year it seems terrazzo is at the top of everyone’s list. We’ve seen a huge increase in ‘effect’ tiles over the last few years; porcelain that looks just like other materials but has all the benefits of tile. Whether it’s brick, wood, cement or stone, we love that this hard-wearing and low maintenance material is providing the latest interior design looks for less.

So, what is terrazzo? Traditionally it was a way to use stone offcuts by mixing them into cement, the cement mixture is poured onto floors or cut into large blocks or panels before installation. It was first seen in 16th century Italy but more recently we’ve spotted furniture, worktops and even fabrics with a terrazzo look. It’s also the material used for the iconic stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, so you know you’re in good company.

While it is a strong material, the surface can be a little rough and therefore the tile industry has come to the rescue by creating terrazzo effect tiles that have a smooth surface. One of our newest ranges (and fast becoming a favourite) is the Valverdi Boutique range – a collection of terrazzo effect tiles that can be used internally and externally. Available in three stunning colours, beige, white and grey, these tiles provide a modern twist on the traditional terrazzo look. At 600x600mm they can be used in most size rooms, but really work their magic when used in indoor-outdoor living spaces.

Unlike other ranges in the Valverdi Indoor-Out collection, the indoor and outdoor tiles do not have the same finish. Boutique indoor tiles have a stunning polished surface that reflects light and adds a spacious feel to any room. As with all Valverdi external porcelain tiles, these have an slip resistant matte-finish which makes them perfect for use on patios, terraces, balconies and even swimming pool surrounds. Despite the different finishes, these tiles still manage to create a flow from indoors to outside, making spaces feel more open.

Porcelain is a great choice for external use as it’s hard-wearing, fade resistant and frost proof, as well as being resistant to slippery moss or mould growth. Interested in the Valverdi Indoor-Out Boutique terrazzo effect tile range? The tiles are currently special order so take around 3-4 weeks to arrive, but you can order samples online now and start planning your project.
