In any area that involves creativity you will always find classics; a little black dress, an armchair, even a ball point pen. Often overlooked as boring or too simple, we believe that the white tile is a classic that deserves more recognition. There are so many little touches that can set a white tile apart from the others and so many ways to style them to make stand out. At The London Tile Co. we have a great range of white tiles in all shapes, sizes and styles – read on to find out more.
If you’re talking classic you can’t start with anything but a metro tile. This is a style that works in every room, even underground train stations, and can be laid in a range of patterns. From traditional or country styles to art decor or industrial, there’s a metro tile to suit every style. Traditionally they tend to be 200x100mm with a bevelled finish, however the term is often used to describe any small format rectangular wall tile. We have simple white bevelled tiles, crackle glaze finishes and 300x75mm vintage style tiles.
Even wood effect tiles are not safe from this trend, with white and light grey fast becoming our most popular options. They complement contemporary designs and open plan living spaces and contrast beautifully with solid black or dark wood furniture. Stone effect tiles are also available in a range of light hues, including the absolutely stunning Calacatta marble effect wall and tiles or Destiny stone effect tiles. We’ve even got realistic white brick effect tiles for those who want to create a subtle exposed brick look.
Texture is a fabulous way to add depth and interest to a simple white room and over the last year it has been a big trend in the tile world. The Napoli range features a decor tile with a linear textured surface as does the Capri textured decor tile in the Eclipse range – these can be used to create a feature wall or with other tiles as a feature strip. We fell in love with the Statement range as soon as we first saw it and this is one range that is all about texture – the three white tiles each replicate a different textured material; concrete, fabric and wood.
While white tiles outside might seem like a no-no due to muddy footprints and other outdoor factors, porcelain paving has made light coloured outdoor tiles a much better option. These tiles will not deter the dirt, but as they are non-porous they are much more resistant to staining and moss/mould growth. They are also really easy to keep clean with either a broom or a power washer so you can keep your patio looking amazing. Shown below are Valverdi City White and PorcelPave Athena Silver.
Grout can make a huge difference to the finished look of your tiles, particularly with white tiles, so it’s an important consideration when planning your project. If you want a subtle or seamless look go for a matching white grout that will blend in with the tiles and conceal the lines. Drawing attention to the joints is also an option, especially if you have gone for an interesting layout like brick bond or herringbone – for this finish choose a bold grout in a contrasting shade. If you are using white tiles on floors or outdoors we would recommend using a grey grout as it is less likely to show any stains or discolouration.
