Kitchen Wall Tiles

The kitchen is one of the rooms in the house that everyone uses, it's where meals are prepared, where people congregate at parties, and where memories are made. With so much riding on a correct tile decision, how can you choose the correct wall tiles for your kitchen?

Let's start with the bare room and decide which walls and surfaces need tiles. This will help you break a large decision into smaller inter design choices that make up your larger theme. If you have many electrical sockets in your kitchen it might be better to opt for smaller tiles rather than making multiple cuts in larger tiles. In addition, whilst larger tiles are on trend and popular, they are heavier and may not be supported by your walls.

Don't try to match the colour of a worktop or floor tiles as this can be counter intuitive to your design. Instead, try to either match tiles with your kitchen units to create a seamless wall space, or contrast floor tiles with an opposite colour for definition. Mixing gloss and matt tile finishes can also work well to create two definitive tiled surfaces and spaces within your kitchen.

Kitchen Floor Tiles

There should only ever be one choice for kitchen floor tiles - porcelain tiles. These tiles are made from dense porcelain and are much stronger, more durable, and harder wearing than standard ceramic wall tiles. This makes them perfect for high traffic areas where people tend to gather - like kitchens. They're also perfect to use with underfloor heating systems as they stay warmer for longer and disperse heat more evenly than other floor types.

You might have also seen that porcelain tiles are non-porous - but what does this mean in terms of practicality? It means they're easy to clean as stains, grime, and other kitchen dirt can't get into the surface of the tile and cause you any problems. Porcelain tiles don't even get water stained and in turn require much maintenance than other flooring options out there - that's a winner in our book!

We advise going for a mid toned shade floor tile as they don't show up dirt as easily as light floor tiles but also won't show dust or grease marks like a darker tile might. There are many different mid tone flooring options with stone effect floor tiles being our favourite for kitchens. Wood effect floor tiles can also work well to breathe a sense of nature into a space and add warmth into your kitchen.

Patterned Kitchen Tiles

There is a reason why stunning patterned tiles are found in busy areas where everyone in the house uses regularly. Patterned floor tiles - like mosaics or Victorian inspired designs - often camouflage dirt and surface dust which makes them perfect for these high traffic areas like the kitchen. This means they they don't require constant cleaning despite being on some of the most used flooring areas in the house.

They are perfect for adding some "wow factor" into your space too, they bring a unique and versatile sense of fun to your kitchen. Your kitchen floor can also exude a sense of classicism if you choose a more refined pattern design - perfect for creating a tasteful retro theme in your home. Another benefit of patterned floor tiles is the ability to create zones by switching between different patterns, or even switching between different tile types all together.

This is perfect for separate cooking areas from eating areas, eating areas from relaxing areas, and so on. We find this can be particularly effective in wide open plan areas, keeping your different zones from blending into one another. We love patterned kitchen floor tiles here at The London Tile Company, which is why we stock designs ranging from Mediterranean and Arabic inspired, through to Victorian checkerboard tiles.

Kitchen Splashback Tiles

Kitchen splashbacks are commonly found in cooking and food preparation areas, protecting the wall behind from splashes, spills and stains. Whilst serving a functional purpose, these tiled surfaces can be the very life blood of your kitchen's interior design, like the sage green kitchen tiles pictured above.

There are many different options available - the two we see most often are metro or subway style tiles, or the classic mosaic tile. Mosaic tiles work wonders in small spaces, cramming a hunge amount of personality and flair into a relatively small space. You can use bright colours, reflective glass and metals - or even a combination of all three to create a unique and eye catching look. They are not without their drawbacks however, whilst they are stunning and draw the eye, they can be harder to clean because they have more grout joints.

Metro tiles look great as kitchen tiles, and we often see them use in kitchen splashbacks in both retro and modern interior designs. Laying them in a brick or herringbone style tile pattern can break up any monotonous feel and make a space feel larger. Metro tiles tend to come in many shades too, allowing you almost unlimited colour choices and tile finishes to play with. With a large range of grout colours available too, there is no reason not to implement a tiled kitchen splashback in your kitchen!
